Pitcher Hideo Nomo, nicknamed "Tatsumaki" (the Tornado) for his unusual windup delivery, was the first Japanese major league baseball player to join the American major leagues.
After playing four years with Japan's Kintetsu Buffaloes, he joined the Los Angeles Dodgers, in 1995.
