The low rainfall levels that we have received this past year, combined with heavy use, has been a strain on the system.

You may have heard that the city is ticketing people who are not abiding by the cities mandatory water restrictions, and water scheduling. You may have also heard that if the canal water levels drop much further they will start to effect the pumps that are used to pump the water out for irrigation.

But does this affect our drinking water?

According to a report by the US Geological Survey, the principal source of freshwater for Cape Coral is the upper limestone of the Hawthorn Aquifer. This aquifer can be contaminated by both upward intrusion and downward intrusion.

Upward intrusion, according to the report, is amplified in areas of heavy water withdrawals, and large
